Grundy Center ambulance director reports maintenance woes, replacement rig expected in December

Mayor Dr. Paul Eberline introduced Dwight Gliem, EMS Director, who provided an end-of-year update on the ambulance department. Gliem said ambulance 500 has persistent maintenance issues and the city plans to list the vehicle on GovDeals. A new ambulance is on order with an estimated delivery date of Dec. 1, 2024.
Gliem reported staffing is going well overall and said one paramedic is currently deployed with the military and is expected to return in December. He credited roughly 26 dedicated volunteers for helping keep ambulance service operational.
On billing, Gliem told council that Physician Claims Company charges 8% of collections for ambulance-billing services. Councilmember Kuester asked what percentage PCC charges; Gliem confirmed the 8% fee. Councilmember Smith asked about the decrease in call volume; Gliem attributed lower call volume in part to Gladbrook-Lincoln Ambulance reducing its coverage from seven days to four days per week about a year ago.
No formal action was taken on the ambulance report. The council thanked Gliem for the update and recorded the department’s plans to list the old rig and to expect the new apparatus in December.
