The Grundy Center City Council on July 1 approved multiple routine and ordinance items, including third readings and adoption of three ordinances and administrative approvals for minutes, bills, and event street closures.
On third reading the council adopted Ordinance 575, which raises water rates by 2% effective July 1, 2024; Ordinance 576, which raises sewer rates by 2% effective July 1, 2024; and Ordinance 577, which amends allowable dates and times for exploding fireworks within city limits. Each ordinance passed on third reading by a 5–0 vote.
At the start of the meeting Lamp moved and Smith seconded approval of the meeting agenda (Rasmussen declared a conflict on Item 9); later Rasmussen moved and Kuester seconded approval of the June 17 regular minutes, the June 24 special minutes, and the May 2024 bills list. The council also approved street closures for the Back To School Bash on Aug. 8: 7th Street from 7 a.m., and H Avenue from 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The council also voted to provide a letter of support for a Chamber Main Street Challenge grant application from Luke and Crystal Davis (South Porch Cider Co.) for renovations at 625 & 627 G Avenue; the Davis pair described plans to update the façade, roof, ground-floor commercial space and upstairs apartments. That motion carried 5–0.
Why it matters: The 2% utility rate increases apply citywide and take effect July 1; the fireworks rule changes alter permissible dates and times for exploding fireworks in the city. The approved street closures will permit the Back To School Bash events in August.
Next steps: Ordinances take effect per their adoption language; the clerk will include these items in the next published minutes and update utility billing as applicable. Note on transcript: the meeting record header lists July 1, 2024; one internal line in the minutes references "Monday, June 3, 2024," which appears to be a minutes transcription error; this article uses the July 1, 2024 meeting date shown in the record header.
