The Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Committee on May 21 approved a push of summer safety outreach focused on J1 workers, visitors and residents, adopting a plan to produce short video spots, distribute reflective armbands and better target messages about helmets, visibility and sidewalk behavior.
Julie, the committee lead on events, said the committee will draft interview-style questions for a videographer and prioritize which short clips to produce for social channels and a YouTube host video. "If we created something, they would probably post it," Julie said, noting the committee has an open purchase order to budget video work but no specified overall dollar amount.
Members discussed formats and audiences: options included a six-clip core series, a five-clip "quick hits" set of reminders (see something, say something; be seen; thank a driver who slows), and short man-on-the-street interviews to test public knowledge. The committee agreed police would lead on e-bike safety messaging while the committee tackles general rider and pedestrian guidance.
The group also prioritized a short, clear helmet reminder: Delaware’s age-based helmet requirement (committee cited "under 18") will be a quick, repeatable item in the campaign. Members emphasized visibility—reflective armbands and lights—and debated how to encourage actual usage after distribution, citing past problems with donated lights losing battery power mid-season.
For outreach logistics, the committee confirmed reflective armbands were being delivered, discussed ordering more shirts (particularly extra small and small sizes for J1 students) and agreed to use kiosks, trolley stops and business bulletin boards to distribute materials. Julie said she will circulate proposed interview questions to the group as a springboard to finalize scripts and scheduling with the videographer.
The committee set next steps: finalize interview questions, prioritize the set of videos to be produced against the open PO and update inventory so materials are ready before the busy weekend events.
