Milaca superintendent reports lifeguard and custodial staffing shortages; new school resource officer starts

During the Jan. 20 meeting of Independent School District No. 912, Superintendent David Wedin and district leaders briefed the board on operational issues affecting programs and facilities for the 2025–26 school year.
Wedin reported that winter weather forced schedule alterations and two school closure days so far this year. The superintendent also recapped the Jan. 5 reorganizational meeting, where board officers were reelected: Chairperson Aimee Struffert, Vice Chairperson Sara Herr-Larsen, Clerk Jennifer Corrow and Treasurer Jere Day.
District staff told the board the community-education program is experiencing a shortage of lifeguards and water-safety instructors, which is limiting the offering of swimming lessons. The facilities report also noted a shortage of custodial staff and that a recent random inspection and walk-through was performed by MN OSHA.
Superintendent Wedin announced that the district’s new School Resource Officer, Deputy Peterson, started with Milaca Public Schools on Jan. 5. Principals and program directors provided routine updates: high school plans for Sno Dayz Week (theme: Candyland), February registration for the 2026–27 school year, READ Act training and Minnesota Multi-Tiered Systems of Support implementation at the high school; elementary winter benchmarking and curriculum review; and athletics and fundraising updates from the activities director.
Vice-Chairperson Sara Herr-Larsen shared a compliment she had received regarding the Milaca 7–12 Online program. The board received the operational updates with no formal motions recorded beyond items in the consent agenda.
