Regional planner outlines Safe Routes to School draft list for Pine City

Penny Simson, transportation planner with the East Central Regional Development Commission, briefed council on the Safe Routes to School planning process that the city, county and school district have been carrying out.
Simson said the planning group has identified infrastructure recommendations — primarily crosswalks and sidewalks — and that the plan is a draft list to help prioritize projects when funding is available. Specific locations mentioned included crosswalks at First Avenue NW and Main Street near the fairgrounds, Fifth Avenue NW at the American Legion, 6th Avenue SW by the elementary school, and sidewalk segments along 8th Street SW to the elementary school. She noted items on the list do not bind the city or school district; the plan codifies priorities to strengthen future funding applications.
Simson said city staff already have engaged the railroads and MDOT and that an on‑site meeting with BNSF, county, city and MDOT is scheduled in July to discuss railroad right‑of‑way issues that can affect project eligibility for state and federal funds. She encouraged the council to refine the list and prioritize projects that are farthest along to improve chances of securing grants.
