Veterans advisory committee reviews Veterans Day plans and veteran banner program

The Veteran and Veteran Families Advisory Committee heard updates on Veterans Day planning and a proposed veteran banner program at its Oct. 7 meeting.
Hannah Kersh, the city’s recreation and events manager, told the committee that planning for the Veterans Day ceremony is “going according to our usual timeline.” She said Winter Springs High School student Octavius Clark will host the event for a third year, the high school band is confirmed and the program will include an invocation, presentation of colors, a hometown-hero presentation and taps. Kersh said the ceremony is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m.
Kersh outlined plans to pilot a single information booth at the memorial for veteran-service organizations to provide resources to attendees. She asked committee members to identify organization contacts and said staff needs participants’ names, organization and a contact by Oct. 28 so organizers can finalize the event map and staffing.
On the banner program, Kersh said staff will present an amendment to the parks department fee schedule to the city commission at its Oct. 13 meeting; the item is listed on the commission’s consent agenda, Brian Dunigan, the city’s director of administrative services and operations, told the committee. If the commission approves the change, registration would open Oct. 14 and remain available through Nov. 14. The proposed fees are $200 for an initial banner, $100 for renewal if a banner is in good condition, and a $100 reproduction fee if a banner needs to be reprinted. Kersh confirmed that the city will store banners between display periods and inspect them for reinstallation.
The committee discussed publicity for the program and Veterans Day event. Kersh said the city will promote both items in the city newsletter, on the city website and through social media; committee members encouraged sharing the notices through homeowners associations and veterans organizations.
Committee members also reviewed upcoming newsletter items and community events. A VFW post is organizing food-basket collections for HUD-VASH clients with collection and delivery timelines discussed; the committee agreed to include Toys for Tots drop-off locations and deadlines in the December newsletter. Members volunteered to coordinate veteran color-guard presentations for the Highland Games in mid-January and to reach out to the Young Marines and American Legion to assist.
Procedural items: the committee approved the minutes from its July 10 meeting and confirmed future meeting dates (second Thursday of January, April, July and October), with the next meeting set for Jan. 8. Staff will circulate an internal contact list to members and the committee noted one member’s term is up for reappointment in 2026.
