Toledo council sets tax-levy public hearing and directs staff to pare budgets

Mayor Brian Sokol asked the Toledo City Council to set a date for a public hearing on the city's proposed tax levy, and councilmembers voted unanimously to hold the hearing at 5:00 p.m. on March 24, 2025.
The council then moved into a budget work session. Council members across the table discussed wages and recommended trimming departmental budgets wherever possible to address projected needs. City Clerk Kim McAdoo was directed to enter the changes discussed into the draft budget; the modified budget will be reviewed at the next budget work session on March 10, 2025 following the regular council meeting.
The action to set the tax-levy hearing was made by Councilmember Boll and seconded by Councilmember Goodhart; the minutes record that all present voiced ayes and there were no nays. The budget work session was convened immediately after the regular meeting adjourned at 5:12 p.m., and the work session itself adjourned at 6:38 p.m.
The hearing will be the formal opportunity for public comment on the levy proposal; the minutes do not include the proposed levy rate or any specific dollar changes to the levy. The clerk and staff will incorporate the council's wage and budget-change guidance into the draft budget for the March 10 review and for discussion at the March 24 hearing if needed.
