Tanya Cook, supervisor of elementary education, told the Education and Policy Committee on June 23 that the district is relaunching the Emerging Leaders Academy (cohort 4) to build leadership capacity across the district.
Cook said the academy targets assistant principals, instructional content leaders, administrative interns and teachers who hold leadership certification. The program will accept about 12–15 applicants selected through an application, resume, letter of recommendation and interview process. The academy will run from September to March with a mix of full and half days, opportunities to shadow current leaders, live problem-solving scenarios and assigned mentors.
Board members asked whether classroom teachers could participate; Cook said yes and noted schools would provide a substitute to allow teachers to attend day sessions. She confirmed applicants must hold the ED leadership certification. The committee discussion included praise for promoting internal hires and developing district leaders rather than relying chiefly on external hires.
There was no action requested on the item; the report was presented for information and planning purposes.
