Council defers skid loader purchase, discusses brush pile security and Pickle Days site concerns

At the July 8 Walker City Council meeting members discussed equipment replacement options for the city’s skid loader and whether to install an automatic gate at the brush pile or instead add a security system.
Council members said they lacked necessary information about the current sale value and trade-in of the old skid loader because the staff member who could provide those details (identified in the minutes only as Kevin) was not present. The council voted to defer the decision to the August 12 meeting to allow staff to provide up-to-date sale information.
Councilmembers debated the costs and practicality of an automatic gate for the city brush pile versus installing a security system. The council indicated it did not feel an automatic gate was necessary at this time and directed Councilmember Kyle Glenn to consult with staff member Kevin and bring recommendations about a security system to the Aug. 12 meeting.
During open forum resident Rozena McVey raised concerns about the new city shop project and about site safety ahead of the community’s Pickle Days celebration; Public Works staff said they would secure the city shop site to limit liability.
The council’s postponement means procurement staff will gather sale/repair information for the existing skid loader and present options -- including purchase, rehab or trade-in -- at the Aug. 12 meeting.
