The Merrillville Redevelopment Commission approved a $24,000 contribution on June 23 to Rebuilding South Lake County to fund rehabilitation of residential structures across seven wards in the town.
Commissioners discussed several funding scenarios before coalescing around $2,000 per home for up to 12 houses. Mr. Pittman noted there were 16 applications and said staff expected to select 12 homes; he suggested $2,000 per house would total $24,000. "I just thought maybe we go 2 2,000 a house for 24,000," he said.
Commissioner Leona Chandler-Felton moved to allocate $24,000 from the RDC to Rebuilding South Lake County; Commissioner Shawna Haynes-Edwards seconded. The commission conducted a roll call vote: Chandler-Felton, Kisha Hardaway, Shawna Haynes-Edwards, Margaret Uzelac and President Shawn Petty each voted yes and the motion passed 5–0.
Following the vote the commission instructed staff (Angie, Joanna and Michael) to work on implementation details for the allocation. Commissioners discussed alternatives including smaller per-house amounts and a lower aggregate contribution before approving the $24,000 figure.
A scheduling note arose in the meeting: a September 19 date was mentioned in passing. Staff will coordinate implementation details and return to the commission as appropriate.
