Benzie County board hires Mitchell Deisch as county administrator after earlier vote on Bill Kennis fails

BEULAH, Mich. — The Benzie County Board of Commissioners voted on Oct. 5, 2015, to hire Mitchell Deisch as county administrator, resolving a contentious two-motion sequence that split the board earlier in the evening.
Chair Vance Bates called the special meeting to order at 7:30 p.m. Commissioners in attendance included Bates, Carland, Griner, Sauer, Walterhouse and Warsecke; Commissioner Tucker arrived shortly after the meeting began.
The hiring process produced two roll-call votes. Commissioner Griner moved, and Commissioner Walterhouse seconded, to hire Bill Kennis as county administrator; the motion failed on a 4-3 roll call, with Griner, Walterhouse and Warsecke voting in favor and Bates, Carland, Sauer and Tucker voting against. Shortly afterward, Commissioner Sauer moved and Commissioner Tucker seconded a separate motion to hire Mitchell Deisch. That motion carried unanimously on a 7-0 roll call: Bates, Carland, Griner, Sauer, Tucker, Walterhouse and Warsecke voted in favor.
The board recorded that contract language for Deisch had not been finalized at the meeting. Members scheduled a special human resources meeting the following morning to discuss and begin negotiating the administrator contract.
After the appointment, Commissioner Tucker moved and Commissioner Warsecke seconded to adjourn until the regular meeting on Oct. 13, 2015, or the call of the chair; that motion carried.
