Benzie County approves two-year lease to keep Thompsonville recycling site open

The Benzie County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously Aug. 11 to enter a two-year lease with the Village of Thompsonville that will keep the village'run recycling site operating.
Marlene Wood, the county recycling coordinator, told commissioners the third and final household hazardous-waste clean-up was completed that weekend and that two tire clean-ups are scheduled this month. She said the Village of Thompsonville has been taken off probation and has signed a two-year lease to continue the recycling site, and she asked the board for approval.
Commissioner Vance Griner moved to authorize the chairman to sign a lease agreement with the Village of Thompsonville; Commissioner Tucker seconded and the motion passed on a unanimous roll-call vote.
Wood also told the board the county will work with the Land Bank to clean up a private residence that currently contains more than 700 tires, and that the county can supply recycling containers for local events. The lease preserves a local drop-off point while the county continues scheduled hazardous-waste and tire collections.
The board took no separate action to fund new programs for recycling operations during the meeting. The lease and confirmation that Thompsonville is no longer on probation were the principal outcomes of the recycling discussion.
