The Minnesota Senate Rules and Administration Committee on June 1 approved an interim travel‑expense memo that largely mirrors prior years’ guidance on mileage, lodging and authorized reimbursements but updates the IRS mileage rate to 72.5 cents per mile.
Director Stengel told the committee the memo retains prior sections on authorized reimbursements, constituent‑service mileage and in‑state and out‑of‑state travel guidelines; he said only the IRS mileage rate and some formatting were changed. "This is very similar to what you've seen in past years," he said, adding the rate has been updated to match the current IRS mileage rate of 72.5 cents per mile.
Senator Johnson raised a concern that a line identifying that certain leadership roles (majority leader, assistant majority leader, president of the senate and minority leader) had authority for certain reimbursable expenses appears to have been removed in a version of the memo after 2023. Committee members asked staff to check when that change occurred and whether the memo should explicitly reinstate language clarifying leadership reimbursement authority. Senator France said staff would follow up.
Senator Pappas moved to approve the interim travel‑expenses memo and accompanying letter dated June 1, 2026; the committee approved the motion by voice vote and then adjourned.
