Parents, wrestling association ask Le Sueur-Henderson board to fund $31,000 in wrestling room mats; superintendent says finance committee review required
Summary
At the Aug. 5 board meeting, parent and volunteer coach Aaron Tiki and Wrestling Association president Scott Wilson urged the district to fund roughly $31,000 for subflooring and practice mats for a new elementary wrestling room; Superintendent Mr Wagner said any expenditure over $5,000 will be reviewed by the finance committee.

Aaron Tiki, a parent and volunteer coach, told the Le Sueur-Henderson School District board on Aug. 5 that the wrestling program needs safer practice space in the new elementary building and requested district help to fund mats and subflooring. "It's my understanding that it's about $31,000 for us to put subflooring and practice mats in that room," Tiki said during the public-comment portion of the meeting. He described the current wrestling room as narrow and cited frequent minor injuries when multiple pairs train in close quarters.
Scott Wilson, president of the Wrestling Association, told the board the association has historically funded uniforms and some competition mats and is willing to help again, but that parents expect the district to "share in the burden." Wilson asked the board to clarify what level of district support would be appropriate and said parents would be disappointed if the school declined to contribute.
Superintendent Mr Wagner said he had received an email about the request and planned follow-up meetings with association representatives and school staff. He told trustees that district procedure requires finance-committee consideration for expenditures above $5,000, saying "anything over $5,000 per finance committee for discussion." Wagner said he would set up committee discussion and meet with stakeholders to explore options.
Board members and staff did not take formal action on funding during the meeting. The superintendent and staff described next steps as staff-level meetings with the Wrestling Association and a subsequent finance-committee review; any recommendation that emerges would come back to the board for formal consideration and vote.
Context and what was said
Tiki emphasized the program's volunteer base and community support and noted that competition mats were purchased by outside groups, while practice mats and subflooring remain an unmet district need. "Our wrestling program has grown a lot in 40 years," he said, arguing that a new room with two full-size mats would reduce injury risk and better accommodate growing participation. Wilson reiterated that the association can contribute financially but sought clarity about district expectations and timing.
What happens next
Wagner indicated he will arrange meetings with school staff, association representatives and finance-committee members to identify funding options; he said any proposal exceeding the $5,000 internal threshold will be discussed at finance committee before the board considers formal action. The board took no vote on funding at the Aug. 5 meeting.
