The Byron Mayor and Council unanimously approved a resolution July 22 authorizing an intergovernmental agreement with Peach County and the City of Fort Valley to seek a one-percent special purpose local option sales tax (SPLOST) and authorized the mayor to execute the agreement.
The resolution, which the council adopted at a special session, says the SPLOST would be imposed for six years beginning April 1, 2027, if approved by voters on Nov. 5, 2024. The document cites O.C.G.A. § 48-8-110 et seq. as the statutory authority for imposing a county SPLOST to finance capital outlay projects for the county and participating municipalities.
Council Member Michael Chumbley moved to approve the resolution; Council Member James Richardson seconded the motion, which the minutes record as passing unanimously. Present for the special session were Mayor Michael Chidester and Council Members James Richardson, Rusty Adams, Michael Chumbley and Chris Hodges; Council Member Alan Dorsey was absent. City Administrator Tiffany Sandefur, City Clerk Telina Allred, and Captain Bryan Hunter attended, and County Clerk April Hodges was present as noted in the minutes.
The resolution authorizes the mayor to execute the attached intergovernmental agreement addressing disbursement of SPLOST proceeds among Peach County, Fort Valley and Byron, and states that prior resolutions in conflict are repealed. The minutes record the resolution as adopted on July 22, 2024.
A closing motion to adjourn was made by Council Member Michael Chumbley, seconded by Council Member Chris Hodges, and carried unanimously; the meeting adjourned at 3:12 p.m. The minutes were signed by Telina Allred, Clerk of Council.
