North Haledon proclaims May 2026 ALS Awareness Month and recognizes Youth Week participants

Mayor Randy George and members of the North Haledon Borough Council presented a proclamation at the May 20, 2026 work session declaring May 2026 as ALS Awareness Month and recognized Youth Week participants from borough schools.
The proclamation, presented to Janet Palkewick, described amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) as a progressive neurodegenerative disease that erodes a person’s ability to walk, talk, eat and breathe. It noted that, on average, patients diagnosed with ALS survive two to five years from diagnosis, that the causes remain unknown, and that people who have served in the military are more likely to develop and die from the disease. The proclamation called for increased public awareness, support for research and improved access to therapies, durable medical equipment and communication technologies for those living with ALS.
Council members introduced the students serving as Youth Week representatives and briefly described their ambitions. Youth Week designees on the dais included Mia Ninos, Dakotah Devroe, Luca Grillo, Sean Dudas, Liam Dudas, Sofia Parenta, Matthew Pazos and Adeline O’Donnell. The council recessed briefly to concur with actions taken by the youth representatives and to welcome them back to the dais.
The presentation followed a unanimous council vote to deviate from the regular order of business so the proclamation and Youth Week recognition could be held during the work session. The work session record shows no public comments during the meeting’s public-comment period.
The proclamation urges borough residents and officials to support ALS research and to advocate for policies and resources that improve quality of life for people living with the disease.
