Mayor Dennis Bardsley and the Underwood City Council on Oct. 8 authorized a community-based committee to work with MAPA on public engagement for the city’s strategic/comprehensive plan.
Grant Anderson, a representative from MAPA, described a proposed public-engagement process that begins with a one-hour session with the committee to generate ideas, followed by development of online and paper surveys open for roughly two weeks. MAPA would compile survey responses and hold a 90-minute town hall — the first 10–15 minutes to explain the purpose and summarize results — then facilitate group discussion and produce a written report representing the public-engagement portion of the plan for council review.
Councilmember Jodi Bose moved, and Councilmember Josh Madsen seconded, to form a community-based committee; Bose and Madsen will convene up to eight community representatives to ensure a range of local perspectives. The motion carried 5-0.
Under the schedule Anderson outlined, MAPA will bring a draft survey to the council for refinement before distribution and will manage compilation of responses and facilitation of the town hall. The committee and MAPA will use the town-hall feedback to produce the public-engagement report that becomes part of the overall comprehensive plan.
The council did not set specific dates at the meeting; next steps are for Bose and Madsen to recruit committee members and for MAPA to present the draft survey to council for approval.
