The Butte City judiciary committee voted June 24 to hold a request from a resident to allow golf carts on certain city streets until law‑enforcement can provide input.
Melanie Watts of Butte, Montana, asked the council (communication 2026-207) for authorization under Montana Code Annotated 61-8-391 to permit operation of golf carts on designated streets with posted speed limits of 25 miles per hour or less. Chairwoman Jay called for discussion after roll call and noted the item had been placed on the agenda for consideration.
Commissioner Thatcher said she had contacted Sheriff Lester after the last judiciary meeting and that he intended to attend to offer comments but was occupied and unable to attend. Commissioner Healey noted Watts’s absence and relayed that Watts had told her she ‘‘cleans houses’’ and often cannot attend meetings because of work commitments.
After the exchange, a motion was made and seconded to hold communication 2026-207 in abeyance pending comment from Sheriff Lester. The motion carried.
The item is held for future consideration; no change to local traffic rules was made at the June 24 meeting.
