Jackson council approves $64,870 bid to replace trails damaged in 2024 flood

The Jackson City Council voted unanimously March 3 to award a $64,870 contract to MR Paving and Excavating to replace walking trails damaged during the 2024 flooding.
Public Works Director Tony Oxborough told the council that FEMA reimbursements related to flood repairs have topped $800,000 and that the walking-trail replacement is "the last project to be completed." Oxborough said the City rebid the work this year after auditors recommended doing so amid state fraud investigations; two bids were lower than the amount FEMA has reimbursed the City, and he said the City hopes it can return some funds to the state.
The motion to approve the low bid was moved and seconded and carried unanimously. Councilmembers recorded the vote as in favor, and Oxborough noted that additional work outside the scope of the FEMA-funded trail replacement — for example, a proposed dike at the south end of town using clay piles near the dog park — would be the City's responsibility.
The council action closes the final FEMA-recognized local project stemming from the 2024 flooding, with the contractor directed to complete the trail work by June 30 as part of the rehabilitation schedule.
