Board requests city help on Bird Island drainage, plans special meetings on gym floor and boiler repairs

On June 22 the Bird Island'Olivia'Lake Lillian school board approved a motion asking the superintendent to appeal to the City of Bird Island to install a catch basin west of the Bird Island gymnasium and to bury a drain line south to an existing catch basin.

The board also discussed facilities work that will be considered at one or more special meetings the week of July 5. Discussion topics include:
- Olivia gymnasium floor: administrators presented abatement and replacement quotes but said details remain on bleacher movement, electrical disconnects and logistics; board plans a special meeting in early July to present full numbers and seek approval.
- Boiler condensate feed tank: board members described the existing tank as undersized for system needs and discussed quotes; Todd indicated an expected cost range of roughly $22,000 to $35,000 and emphasized the replacement would reduce excess steam, moisture and potential mold, and extend mechanical system life. A vote or formal action is expected at the upcoming special meeting.
Board members asked that finance staff (Nicole) attend the special meeting to explain funding options, including using LTFM (long-term facilities maintenance) and health-and-safety levies where appropriate. The board flagged that abatement costs for gym-floor replacements may be eligible for health-and-safety levy funds depending on final estimates and approvals.
The board closed facilities discussion by scheduling the special meetings and noting community notice requirements for posting.
