Applicant David Sears told the board the coop ‘‘was constructed by the Amish with a decorative look’’ and said the backyard and side yard provide space for the structure. The board noted it had received six written comments from neighbors and one from the HOA, all expressing concerns about how the coop would look, the potential for chickens to roam free, and possible code violations.
Chairwoman Elizabeth Lott reminded the board that the town’s regulations require a 20‑foot rear and side setback for accessory structures and said the plans lacked sufficient detail to determine whether an alternative arrangement might comply. Given the outstanding written objections and the need for clearer plans and setback information, Sharon Cupoli moved to continue the application to a future meeting; the motion passed 5–0.
The continuation leaves open the possibility that the applicant will provide revised plans, measurements, or other mitigation (for example, additional setbacks or screening) to address neighbor and HOA concerns. The board did not vote on the variance at the Jan. 7 meeting.
