Council approves two short-term rental special exceptions, staff stresses code compliance

Perry City Council on April 7 approved two special exceptions to permit short-term residential rentals at 1306 Keith Drive and 303 Martin Luther King Drive.
Miss Carson told the council the 1306 Keith Drive property (SUSE00072026) is a three-bedroom, two-bath house the owner proposes to rent to up to eight occupants with space for four vehicles; the property passed the city's health-and-safety inspection and the Planning Commission recommended approval. Council later moved and seconded to approve the special exception unanimously.
Miss Carson then presented SUSE00132026 for 303 Martin Luther King Drive, a four-bedroom, three-bath home located in the Bloodworth, Beckham and Nunn subdivision (platted 1925). Owner James R. McGee said he and his wife renovated the property and intend to use it as a short-term rental; he told the council, "we are interested in that, and we hope you all would be able to allow us to be able to have it in that way." The property also passed inspection and Planning Commission review; the council approved the request unanimously.
City staff reminded prospective short-term rental operators they must comply with applicable city ordinances related to trash, noise and parking, and that parking, guest limits and inspections are enforceable permit conditions.
