Middle River Legacy Committee accepts remediation bids after roof fundraiser falls short

The committee accepted two contractor bids to address water damage: Tony Brandon submitted a $4,500 bid to remove old insulation and Kilen Custom Cleaning submitted a $2,500 bid to clean the building ducts. Committee member Guy Strandberg moved to accept both bids and committee member KayDell Super seconded; the motion passed unanimously. The committee recorded that funds for the work will come from the Legacy Fund general spendable account and that air quality testing will follow the remediation work.
Committee member Laurie Stromsodt and Jon Wynn completed a DEED application seeking support to replace the Legacy Center roof. The group also reviewed fundraising for the 'Raise the Roof' campaign: the committee reported $28,370 raised to date and roof repair costs to date of $37,215, with the shortfall covered from the Legacy Fund general spendable account. The minutes note an anticipated donation of $10,000 and project the committee's total net assets at $44,099.85. A payment due to the city for a December Otter Tail bill had not yet been received.
Separately, Stromsodt reported progress on the remodeled weight room: Wi‑Fi has been installed at an estimated cost of $400–$500, the treadmill needs repairs expected to be covered under warranty, and an open house will be scheduled after Christmas. The committee also recorded interest from Tara and Stephanie Schenkey in managing a Schoolhouse Airbnb once Legacy Center repairs are complete.
Chairperson Deb Zak listed an upcoming community calendar: the 2nd Annual Merry Middle River Christmas will run Dec. 4–8, with a Winter Wonderland at the Legacy Center on Dec. 8 at 1:00 p.m., featuring decorated trees sponsored by local businesses and organizations, a hot chocolate bar, cookie decorating, a bag raffle, Jingle Bingo, sleigh rides and an outdoor live nativity. Other items noted included a 3-on-3 basketball event in April and a rodeo at the Northland Threshing Bee on Sept. 12 next year.
Alaura Klegstad volunteered to assist with scheduling and opening the Legacy Center because there are currently no city offices at the building to handle those duties. The committee scheduled its next meeting for Jan. 13 at 5:00 p.m. and adjourned. The minutes were signed by Secretary Arlys Strandberg.
