Council approves Madison Street streetscape contracts for lighting and undergrounding

The Dublin City Council on May 16 approved two related agreements to advance the Madison Street streetscape project.
Staff described a Georgia Power agreement to install 16 lamp-post style streetlights on Madison Street between Church and Jefferson streets. Mr. Powell said the upfront installation cost for the lights is $139,700 and that the monthly cost for the 16 fixtures will be about $3,828; staff said the upfront cost will be paid from a rural downtown redevelopment grant while the monthly expense will be covered by the general fund. Councilman Brown moved to approve the resolution; Councilman Godfrey seconded, and the motion passed by voice vote.
Council also approved a separate agreement with Charter Communications to deconstruct aerial facilities and install underground fiber and coaxial services along the same corridor. Staff said the work is part of the Madison Street project and is being paid for with grant funding; the meeting transcript’s numeric formatting for any city share of that Contract was unclear and is not specified in this report. Councilman Smith moved the Charter agreement; Councilman Brown seconded and the motion passed.
Staff said Georgia Power will be responsible for maintenance and replacement if lights are damaged. Implementation will move forward under Public Works and project staff will coordinate grant reimbursement and monthly budgeting.
