JASPER, Ind. — The Dubois County Commissioners on July 19 heard Highway Superintendent Steve Berg announce his retirement effective Dec. 31, 2024, and voted 2‑1 to name Donald Lueken a superintendent‑in‑training to shadow Berg through his final months in office.
Highway Superintendent Steve Berg told the commissioners he will retire at the end of the year after 24 years with the department and “thanked all those that worked with him during his 24 year tenure.” He recommended that his successor train alongside him to learn the various aspects of the position.
Commissioner Chad A. Blessinger opened discussion about hiring a superintendent‑in‑training. Commissioner Nick Hostetter raised the possibility of creating a Highway Department Head role as a single point of contact to run the department, a structural option meant to clarify leadership during transitions.
A motion to select Donald Lueken as the superintendent‑in‑training was made, seconded and carried by a 2‑1 vote; Commissioner Serice Stenftenagel voted against the motion. The minutes record that Lueken will retain his current position while training with Berg until December, when a new superintendent will be appointed for 2025.
The meeting, held in the Commissioners/Council Room at the Courthouse Annex in Jasper, was opened by President Blessinger at 12:40 p.m.; the special session was adjourned at 1:57 p.m.
Formal documents and next steps for appointing the 2025 superintendent were not specified in the minutes.
