Milaca council approves routine measures, accepts resignation and declares vacancy

The Milaca City Council on May 21 approved a package of routine measures and accepted a resignation that leaves a council seat vacant.
Mayor Dave Dillan called the meeting to order at 6:02 p.m. and the council approved the agenda as amended. The council voted to approve the consent agenda, which included the April 16 minutes and bills.
The council unanimously approved Resolution 26-09 to allow a minor subdivision at 320 River Drive W after City Manager Tammy Pfaff said engineers had reviewed the proposal and surveys were complete. The council also approved Resolution 26-10 to authorize street closures for the Milaca Chamber Parade.
Councils approved Resolution 26-11, a budget adjustment affecting Public Works and the Fire Department.
The council took the first reading of Ordinance 555 (Chapter 34), establishing a pool-filling fee schedule. Councilmember Tim Poorker questioned whether all revenue should flow to the water fund, saying the Fire Department also incurs wear and tear when using water. City Manager Tammy Pfaff said the proposal would allocate $100 per load to the water fund and $50 per load to the Fire Department and noted the city pays about $4,000 per month for water treatment. Poorker said he preferred a 50/50 split; the council approved the ordinance on first reading and said it will continue working on details before final adoption.
Following the recent death of longtime volunteer Ken Muller, the council approved Resolution 26-12 accepting his resignation and declaring the seat vacant. City Attorney Damien Toven told the council it could appoint a temporary replacement or leave the seat vacant until the next election; no appointment was made at the meeting.
The council also accepted a donation for a pump track and trail loop at Rec Park and noted the Milaca Liquor Store’s 80th-anniversary event scheduled for May 23.
In new business the council approved a request from the DAC for $20,000 from the gambling fund to support the We-Go Swing; Mayor Dillan abstained from that vote because he serves on the DAC board. The council approved the Chamber parade special event and moved the June council meeting from June 18 to June 17 because of the parade.
The meeting concluded with brief council comments and adjournment at 6:41 p.m.
