Chattahoochee County work session: roads, quarterly amendments and public-records concerns

County Manager Thomas Weaver reported at a March 25 work session that Chattahoochee County received a local road assistance grant that will piggyback on the county’s LMIG allocation and allow work on additional local roads. Weaver said portions of McGlaun and Smith roads were previously stabilized and may need renewed work, and that Liberty Hill Road and Wells Street had spot riprap repairs following erosion issues. He also reported landfill headwall repairs and that the county has begun receiving 2025 SPLOST proceeds.
Recreation staffer Mordie Askew provided departmental updates. Community development staff Samantha Hedgecoke presented a packet of upcoming activities — including a rabies clinic set for April 5, 4‑H events, and a car show — and will work with the county attorney to draft cemetery bylaws and a conditional-use permit (CUP) process update to be considered at Planning & Zoning on March 27.
Commissioners discussed a set of proposed quarterly budget amendments affecting multiple departments. Weaver outlined items that will require amendment: property‑tax reimbursement (not budgeted), EMS salary corrections, housing of prisoners, additional legal-services funding (the county faces active litigation), library line items that need bookkeeping corrections, and a coroner salary correction. Weaver reported the total of proposed amendments at $294,725, to be drawn from county reserves; commissioners agreed to bring quarterly amendments forward at regular intervals for review and formal action.
The Friendship Road LMIG bid packets were reviewed and staff requested additional technical review; the commission tabled the bid decision for a future work session. Chairman Charles Coffey raised concerns about the county’s use of nondisclosure on certain public records, saying some exceptions are being overused and urging that the county follow state public-records law while recognizing legitimate law-enforcement exceptions.
Items set for the April 1 regular meeting included cemetery bylaws updates, the conditional-use permit process clarification, a National Donate Life proclamation, and a tax-refund request from Tracy Chiodo. The work session adjourned at 9:44 a.m.
