During the June 23 meeting the Azusa Unified School District Board of Education presented certificates honoring Dr. Paul Flores of Azusa Pacific University for decades of partnership through the CHAMP (College Headed and Mighty Proud) program and recognized Gladstone Middle School teacher Hannah Mangold as the California Council for the Social Studies 'Rookie of the Year.
Board members described how Dr. Flores's program introduced fourth graders to college campuses and paired students with university mentors; several trustees and district leaders credited the program with influencing current district teachers who first visited a campus as elementary students. Board Vice President Rodriguez-Pef1a said she was grateful for his work and noted family members who benefited from the program.
Dr. Paul Flores accepted the recognition and thanked the board, his wife and district principals for the partnership. "I just want to thank you all," he said, reflecting on the long-term relationships between APU and district classrooms.
The board also presented a certificate to Hannah Mangold of Gladstone Middle School for earning the statewide Rookie of the Year award in social studies; colleagues praised her early-career leadership and invited a photo with the board and honorees.
Separately, members used the meeting to offer extended remarks thanking Superintendent Arturo Ortega for his leadership in his final official board meeting; Ortega responded with remarks thanking staff, cabinet, and the community. No formal actions were taken as part of the recognitions beyond presentation of certificates.
