Finance committee approves $132,000 HOME amendment to sustain rent assistance for elderly renters

City Development staffer Mike Manke told the committee the funding is targeted to support elderly households, elderly veterans and elderly residents with disabilities and would be used by the housing authority to continue assisting eligible people on the Section 8 waiting list. "This proposed amendment would fund an additional $120,000 for rent assistance and also an additional $12,000 for administrative expenses for housing authority staff to run the program on our behalf," Manke said.
A committee member asked whether the additional money increases the number of awards or merely sustains the current participants. Manke responded that the amendment allows the housing authority to continue assistance for existing participants as spots open on the Section 8 list rather than immediately expanding the number of active awards.
The committee moved and seconded approval; the chair called the roll and the motion carried unanimously.
The amendment does not specify individual awards or recipient names in the transcript; implementation will be handled by the Kenosha Housing Authority under the HOME program guidelines.
