Crawfordsville dismisses porch unsafe order at 1304 S. Grant Ave, hearing continued for sidewalk plan

At a continued public hearing on Jan. 7, the Board of Public Works and Public Safety considered an unsafe building order for 1304 South Grant Avenue, property owned by Malcolm Tanner. The hearing was a follow-up to a Nov. 19, 2025 proceeding.
Barry Lewis, Code Enforcement Officer, and Jeff Davenport, Building Inspector, reported to the board on the property's condition. Davenport told the board that the porch is not presently unsafe. Ashley Tanner appeared on behalf of owner Malcolm Tanner; no legal counsel represented the owner at the hearing.
Mayor Todd Barton dismissed the unsafe-building order as it related to the porch but continued the overall hearing to Feb. 11, 2026, to allow the owner to submit a written plan for sidewalk repairs or replacement as requested at the Nov. 19 hearing. Susan Albrecht seconded the motion and the board recorded the motion as passed.
The continued hearing sets a clear procedural requirement: a written sidewalk plan must be filed by the Feb. 11 hearing date for further board consideration.
