Board honors April as art educator of the year; teacher describes program growth

Board members praised April for transforming what they described as a struggling program into one that engages students with community-relevant material and broader arts experiences. April spoke in first-person about her teaching history, nonprofit and summer outreach work, and the grant-writing experience that helped secure guest artists and professional development for the district.
“...this is my favorite school district that I have ever taught in,” April said, describing smaller class sizes and administrative support that allowed her to expand art offerings and bring in guest artists, including one who has painted a professional mural for a regional team and who is expected to work with students in the new building.
Board members congratulated April and expressed appreciation for her work on student-centered art opportunities and community partnerships. No board action was required beyond recognition.
