East Whiteland supervisors approve drone purchase, advertise open‑space committee and several infrastructure items

The East Whiteland Township Board of Supervisors met Jan. 21 and approved a series of routine motions and purchases designed to support operations and upcoming projects.
Police Chief Chris Yeager recounted demonstrations of three drones and recommended purchase of a DJI Matrice 30 thermal drone for $12,853. The board unanimously approved the purchase (motion by Vice‑Chair Rich Orlow; seconded by Member Peter Fixler). Two officers are already licensed to operate the equipment, Chief Yeager said, and the department reviewed multiple demos before selecting the larger model for its additional capabilities.
The board authorized advertising an ordinance to establish a seven‑member Open Space Committee and approved advertising a tobacco‑free parks and trails ordinance; enforcement of the tobacco rule would be at police discretion, Director of Park & Recreation Larry Iaccio said. The board also authorized bidding for the Phoenixville Pike/Sidley Road intersection improvement, noting Charlestown Township is leading the project and a grant funds roughly two‑thirds of the cost.
In Planning & Development business the board approved land development plans including LD‑07‑2024 (Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine parking and generator project) and granted a waiver request for WLD‑10‑2024 (Vanguard gated access). The board approved multiple time extensions for other projects and ratified the consent agenda, which included payment of bills totaling $1,923,055.91 and contract approvals such as Delta Development Group ($5,500) and Bowman Consulting Supplement No. 2 for the Moores Road Sidewalk Project ($36,000). The board also ratified equipment purchases including a 2024 dump truck for $119,189 and server replacement work for $28,221.
Most motions on the consent agenda passed unanimously. The meeting adjourned at 9:15 p.m.
