The Hammond City Council approved a temporary waiver of the city's open-container ordinance for Hot August Night on Aug. 22, 2026, allowing controlled alcohol service during a ticketed tasting tour in the downtown event boundary.
Michelle Kendal, director of the Hammond Downtown Development District, told the council the event will be a scaled-back, ticketed tasting tour hosted inside about 32 participating businesses and limited to roughly 400' 450 tickets between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. She said the format eliminates the main stage, vendors and a car show and that the DDA and HPD are coordinating safety and parking plans. "We're looking to reestablish Hot August Night as a community-focused event," Kendal said.
Council approved the waiver after discussion of security and traffic controls. The council recorded an abstention from Councilman Andrews; other members voted "Aye." The mayor and staff will finalize the administration's permit and security plan with HPD before the event.
