The Hammond City Council voted June 23 to name a courtroom in the Leon Ford Memorial Justice Building for the late Judge Grace Bennett Gassaway.
Councilman Kip Andrews introduced the ordinance and several members of the public, including Leon Merlin and Bobby Carter, spoke in favor of the honor. Commenters cited Judge Gassaway's long service on the bench, her fairness and her work on juvenile programs. Bobby Carter said she "instituted many, many juvenile programs" and that naming the courtroom would honor her legacy.
The council moved and seconded the ordinance and recorded unanimous "Aye" votes to adopt the measure. The naming will proceed under city procedures for facility namings.
