Henrico raises household refuse disposal fees; resident seeks enforcement on overgrown hedges

The Henrico County Board of Supervisors on June 23 adopted an ordinance amending county code Section 17-23 to set new fees for household refuse disposal areas.
County staff said the fee changes reflect historic rates that had not been updated since the 1990s: household waste and up to four tires will increase from $3 to $5, up to two additional tires will increase from $1 to $5 per tire, and appliances containing CFCs/HCFCs will increase from $15 to $20. Access to household recycling and vegetative waste areas will remain free for residents, staff said.
During the public comment period, Rochelle Smith, a resident of the Fairfield District, urged the board to address a neighboring property with tall overgrown hedges that she said have created visibility and pest problems for nearby residents and a bus stop. Smith said county crews had visited previously for grass cutting but that the hedges remain an eyesore and a safety concern. County staff at the meeting agreed to follow up and provided a staff contact for further information.
The board adopted the ordinance by voice vote after a short staff presentation and a period for questions about the fee history.
