Charlestown EAC proposes PFAS community education after noting 1,100 well-dependent homes

Charlestown Township’s Environmental Advisory Committee on Feb. 9 agreed to prioritize a community education session on PFAS and other contaminants in private and public water supplies. The committee discussed inviting Beth Yount of Penn State University Extension to present and proposed promoting the session through Nature News and the township’s outreach channels.
Committee chair Carol Armstrong raised the proposal and noted the township’s reliance on private wells, saying the EAC should help residents understand risks and testing options; minutes state roughly 1,100 homes use well water. Armstrong asked members to consider timing and promotion for the presentation so the session can reach well owners and other residents.
Meg Solomon and Sarah Pickering supported making the April Nature News and the community education series a vehicle for the PFAS discussion. The committee did not set a firm date for the Beth Yount presentation; members agreed to follow up with the presenter and announce details once confirmed.
The EAC also recorded that its Nature News entry for April will focus on water wells and PFOS or other contaminants, and that communications will direct well-dependent households toward available testing and preventive resources. The committee’s next step is to confirm the presenter’s availability and a date, and then to publicize the session through the township newsletter and EAC social channels.
