Cusseta–Chattahoochee work session sets Friendship Road as top LMIG priority, plans CUP review with Planning & Zoning

During its Jan. 27 work session, the Unified Government of Cusseta–Chattahoochee County agreed to prioritize repairs on Friendship Road and to use the county’s 2024 LMIG allocation to address the roadway’s deterioration.
County Manager Thomas Weaver told commissioners that Friendship Road is in rough shape and recommended applying LMIG funds rather than waiting for other funding cycles. Commissioners accepted the recommendation and directed staff to add road projects to future work-session agendas.
The board also agreed to continue a review of the Conditional Use Permit process and to invite the Planning & Zoning Board to a Feb. 24 evening meeting to examine ambiguous language and recommend changes; Planning & Zoning has also proposed reducing the board from seven to five members. Commissioners added reappointments to Planning & Zoning and a potential Public Safety Director item to the Feb. 4 regular meeting agenda.
Additional operational updates at the work session included department reports on parks programming, permitting/code activity, water-well repairs and public-works staffing and promotions. Robert Sumner offered a public comment describing a training operation at the former NSA compound and offered pro bono events and assistance for local residents.
Why it matters: Repairs to Friendship Road will affect local travel and maintenance budgets; revising CUP procedures and involving Planning & Zoning could change permitting timelines or standards for conditional uses in the county.
Next steps: Staff will prepare LMIG-related project scoping and cost estimates and will coordinate the Feb. 24 meeting with Planning & Zoning. The cemetery bylaw work and public-safety appointment remain on upcoming agendas.
