Fire, streets, parks and community engagement reports highlight training, road work and a TAMIO website award

City staff briefed council on quarterly department activity for March–May, covering the fire department, streets and parks, and community engagement.

Fire Chief Colby McBride reported 32 fire incidents in the quarter including six structure fires, emphasized medical calls as the department’s primary call volume, and highlighted ongoing pre-plan inspections and joint training (active shooter, live burns) that support response readiness.

Street Superintendent Mike Hall described preventative maintenance, nearly 2,772 linear feet of asphalt repairs and about 1,318 potholes filled in the past three months, reuse of milling material to save costs, culvert and ditch work to address drainage, and completion of Harbor Point Road phase 3.

Community engagement coordinator Brooke Atkinson Harrell reviewed programming and events at the community center (training sessions, Narcan pop-ups, United Way allocations, youth activities) and reported the city website and social-media posts reached broad audiences during the period; she also announced Gun Barrel City received an award of excellence from the Texas Association of Municipal Information Officers (TAMIO) for its municipal website.

Council members praised staff work on recent emergency responses, park improvements, and outreach. Staff said page- and post-archiving and public-information practices will continue under city records-retention rules.
