Decatur council adopts fire-code and claims-payment ordinances, approves three public events; council member recuses from Pride approval
Summary
On May 6 the council adopted Ordinance 2025-3 (Fire Code) and Ordinance 2025-4 (allowing certain claim payments prior to approval) by 5–0 roll-call votes, and approved permits for the Memorial Day Parade, Festival De Hispanos, and Decatur Pride (the latter with Council member Jenny Bowers-Shultz recusing).
The City of Decatur Common Council adopted two ordinances and granted three event permits at its May 6 meeting.
City Attorney Anne Razo read Ordinance 2025-3 by short title to amend the Fire Code. Council member Jenny Bowers-Shultz moved to introduce and adopt the ordinance on first reading; after suspending the rules the council adopted Ordinance 2025-3 on its second and final reading by roll-call vote (5–0).
The council then considered Ordinance 2025-4, which permits payment of certain claims before Board/Council approval to avoid late fees. Attorney Razo read the ordinance by short title; Jenny Bowers-Shultz moved for adoption and, after suspending the rules, the ordinance was adopted on second and final reading by roll-call vote (5–0).
Event permits were approved for three community events: the American Legion’s Memorial Day Parade (May 26, 2025, 10:00 a.m. start, street closures as presented), Festival De Hispanos (Sept. 20, 2025 on Madison Street Plaza; street closures similar to last year), and Decatur Pride, Inc. (June 28, 2025, Madison Street Plaza, family-friendly activities including food trucks, crafts, face-painting and a drag performance; organizers estimated 100–200 attendees and noted 2 Brothers would provide drinks). Council member Bowers-Shultz recused herself from the vote on the Decatur Pride event because she is a member of the Decatur Pride committee; the motion to approve was adopted.
