Caledonia council tables decision on $641,403 rural pumper truck

Caledonia City Council members on Aug. 26 voted unanimously to table consideration of a $641,403 proposal to replace rural fire engine No. 1430 and deferred the decision to their Sept. 9 meeting.
City Clerk/Administrator Jake Dickson presented the lowest bid, $641,403 from Custom Fire Apparatus for a 2025 International pumper with all‑wheel drive and a rear pump panel, and said a required progress payment of $140,600 would be split between the City and the Rural Fire District. Dickson told the council approximately $500,000 would remain to cover when the truck is delivered in an estimated 22 to 24 months and outlined funding options including interfund loans, bonds and a potential grant that will not be available until Sept. 1.
Member Robert “Bob” Klug moved to table the discussion to allow staff time to research funding sources and for the Rural Fire District Board to review the proposal; Mayor DeWayne “Tank” Schroeder seconded the motion and it passed unanimously. The Rural Fire District Board planned to discuss the truck at its Aug. 27 meeting, and staff said they would research grant and other funding opportunities before the council reconvenes the item.
The council’s action was procedural: no purchase was authorized and no contract was signed. The next step is for staff to report back with funding options and any grant updates at the Sept. 9 council meeting.
