Cape Girardeau board honors CTC national winner and spring athletes

The Cape Girardeau Board of Education spent the opening portion of its June 22 meeting recognizing students and coaches for spring accomplishments and national-level competition.

Career & Technology Center: Carol LeGrand, who will serve as assistant director at the Career and Technology Center next year, introduced Desiree Lewis, a national gold medalist in early childhood skills. LeGrand described the national competition process, noting students completed a professional résumé, mock interviews, a professional development skills test and a teaching demonstration before judges; she said Desiree was "one of the seven who received a gold medalist" and highlighted the difficulty of performing a lesson to judges and pretending to teach preschool children.

Spring athletics: Coaches recognized strong spring seasons across tennis, golf, girls and boys track. Coach Dana Powell credited seniors Will and Bruce Miller with transforming the boys tennis program into a daily-practice culture that attracted new players; coach Brian Johnson highlighted Seth Ferguson's district championship and state qualification in golf and Josiah Seeball's fourth-place finish at state. Track coaches celebrated multiple state qualifiers: Layla (6th in discus), Teraji (state champion in the 100 meters, a sophomore), and Kent (boys state champion in his event); several relay and field placings were cited.
