Wapsie Valley board approves policies, vendor contracts, personnel and open enrollments

The Wapsie Valley Community School District board approved multiple administrative items at its Jan. 20 meeting, including policy updates, vendor contracts for grounds and snow removal, personnel actions, and several open-enrollment requests. Director Kaufman moved to approve the consent items and policy package; Director Aiello seconded the policy motion. Most motions passed unanimously.
Policy and publication approvals: The board approved Board Policies 103 and 103R1 and a set of student- and operations-related policies and exhibits (505.08, 505.8R1, 506.01 and exhibits/regulations through 506.04) with no language changes as presented. The board also designated the Waterloo Courier as the district’s official publication for the 2025–26 school year.
Contracts and bids: The board awarded snow-removal and lawn-care contracts for the 2025–2027 seasons: Weeds on Fire received awards covering JH/HS and Readlyn elementary (snow removal) and lawn care for JH/HS, Readlyn and Fairbank; the snow-removal bid for Fairbank and three rural locations was awarded to Adam Kaufman. That motion carried 3-0 with Director Kaufman recorded as abstaining. No reasons for the abstention were stated in the minutes.
Personnel and enrollments: The board accepted the resignation of Dianne McClain, associate at Fairbank, effective at the end of the school year, and approved a contract for Casey O’Donnell as junior high boys basketball coach for $1,955 (Base 1/Year 1). On the consent agenda the board approved open-enrollment requests including a kindergarten student request from Neal and Molly Finder (incoming from Sumner-Fredericksburg effective 2025–26), an immediate open-enrollment for a 9th-grade daughter of Melissa Sander into Iowa Connections Academy, and an open-enrollment for Kristen Dvorak’s 10th-grade daughter into Sumner-Fredericksburg effective Dec. 16, 2024.
Calendar and next steps: The board set a public hearing on the 2025–26 school calendar for Feb. 17, 2025. Board talking points recorded that members will visit FCS and music rooms after the meeting and will obtain answers on outstanding HVAC and FCS-hood questions.
Finance: The meeting minutes include vendor payment listings and fund totals for general, PPEL, activity and lunch funds; the board approved the bills as part of the consent agenda.
