Independent School District No. 2711 (Mesabi East Schools) held a regular board meeting July 1, 2019, in the board room in Aurora. Chair Walt Hautala called the meeting to order at 5:30 p.m., and the board recorded Directors Amanda Gross, Walt Hautala, Gene Maki and Kathy Undeland as present; Directors Hill and Worshek were absent.
The board approved the agenda on a motion by Director Gene Maki, seconded by Director Amanda Gross. During the consent agenda, the board approved computer checks, payroll and hand payables totaling $1,620,166.51, accepted minutes from June 3 and June 24, 2019, and authorized tuition agreements with ISD 709 for two students (start date 6/12/19) and ISD 318 Grand Rapids for one student (start date 6/17/19). Director Maki moved the consent agenda and Chair Hautala seconded; the motion passed.
Directors also approved routine memberships and contracts. The board renewed the district’s Minnesota Rural Education Association (MREA) membership for 2019–2020 at $2,104.00 on a motion by Chair Walt Hautala, seconded by Director Kathy Undeland. The board approved the district’s 2019–2020 insurance premium with Range Reliable for property, liability, fleet insurance and workers’ compensation in the amount of $110,290.31; Director Amanda Gross moved the insurance renewal and Director Gene Maki seconded. Director Kathy Undeland recorded an abstention on the insurance vote; the motion carried.
Personnel actions included short-term summer hires and an athletic posting. The board assigned Renee Grivefe as a temporary summer utility worker from June 17 to August 30 (motion by Director Gross, seconded by Director Maki) and assigned Deb DePew as a temporary summer utility worker from June 24 to August 30 (motion by Director Maki, seconded by Chair Hautala). Nikki Mount was assigned as a temporary summer janitor from June 10 to August 30 on a motion by Chair Hautala, seconded by Director Gross. The board also authorized Superintendent Allen to post for a girls diving coach; the position was specified as 68% of the teacher agreement for the diving/C team (motion by Director Maki, seconded by Director Undeland).
The board accepted a $500 monetary donation earmarked for sensory-related classroom supplies and therapy tools (motion by Director Maki, seconded by Director Gross). A district patron, Mike Beach, provided an update on the district construction project during patron comments; the minutes record the update but provide no further detail.
Reports to the board were noted as being provided under separate cover. The board set its next regular meeting for August 5, 2019, at 5:30 p.m. and adjourned at 6:04 p.m. on a motion by Director Amanda Gross, seconded by Director Kathy Undeland.
