Mesabi East board approves preliminary 2022–23 budget, hires high school principal and ratifies teacher contract

The Mesabi East School District Board approved its preliminary 2022–23 budget and hired Tim Mellstrom as high school principal at its March 7 regular meeting in Aurora.
Director Amanda Gross moved to approve the preliminary 2022–2023 budget as presented; Director Chris Baudhuin seconded and the motion passed unanimously among directors present. The board also approved the consent agenda, which included payrolls and bills totaling $1,203,126.23 and tuition agreements with ISD 709 Duluth for two students with start dates of Jan. 28 and Feb. 18, 2022.
The board voted to hire Tim Mellstrom as high school principal, at Step 1 of the Administrators Master Agreement, effective July 1, 2022. Director Chris Baudhuin moved the hiring motion and Director Amanda Gross seconded; the motion carried.
The board ratified the teacher agreement Local #1255 for 2021–2023 after a motion by Director Kathy Undeland, seconded by Director Amanda Gross. Directors also approved the district’s spring coaching recommendations, confirming hires and volunteer coaches for baseball, golf, softball and track as listed in the minutes.
On school safety, the board approved an update to the school safety plan. The minutes note that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention updated guidance the prior week (March 4), clarifying that masks were not required on school buses; the district indicated the county had moved to a low transmission category and adjusted its bus mask approach accordingly.
Other personnel actions approved included a teacher leave of absence from Aug. 29 to Oct. 17, 2022; acceptance of monetary donations totaling $866.50 earmarked for swim/lifeguard training, I Love to Read Month and the Class of 2023 prom; and acceptance of the retirement resignation of teacher Stacy Holmstrom, effective May 31, 2022. A motion to add an agenda item for the teacher retirement was approved at the start of the meeting.
