Mendota council approves preliminary 2026 budget, $500 for jail restoration and routine leases

The Mendota City Council unanimously approved a preliminary 2026 budget set at $185,000 and several routine items at its Sept. 9 meeting at the Mendota VFW.
Mayor Mielke moved to adopt the preliminary budget after a review with the city clerk; Council member Donnelly seconded the motion, which passed 4-0. Council previously reviewed budget line items with the clerk during the meeting.
In other formal actions, the council approved the Aug. 12 minutes (moved by Council member Golias; seconded by Council member Donnelly), accepted the treasurer’s report (moved by Council member Golias; seconded by Council member Donnelly), and agreed to a monthly storage lease with Lilydale for $30 to hold city paperwork (motion by Mayor Mielke; seconded by Council member Golias). All of those motions carried 4-0.
Council member Lee moved, with Council member Golias seconding, to allocate $500 to support restoration supplies for the Mendota Jail, matching funds reportedly raised by a volunteer identified to council as Jim; that motion also carried 4-0.
The meeting adjourned at 8:17 p.m. after routine staff reports and brief council remarks.
