Council honors firefighters and police officers and proclaims Georgia Retired Educators Day

Savannah City Council opened its Oct. 24 meeting with presentations honoring public safety personnel and issuing a community proclamation.
Mayor Eddie W. DeLoach and Fire Chief Derik Minard presented Life Saving Awards to Advanced Firefighters Trevor Jaha and Joseph Alamillo for administering CPR and saving the lives of citizens during an in‑flight emergency. The two firefighters were recognized together and the mayor noted the awards during the presentations.
Police Chief Roy Minter presented commendations to Corporal Steven Bland and Advanced Police Officers Austin Neumann and William Daniel for purchasing car seats for families with underage children. Chief Minter also announced a Nov. 8 Badge Pinning Ceremony at the Cultural Arts Center for newly hired and promoted officers.
Additionally, Mayor Pro‑Tem Carolyn H. Bell presented a proclamation to the Chatham Retired Educators Association declaring Nov. 3, 2019 as Georgia Retired Educators Day. President Claire Williams and association members Beatrice Campbell and Brenda Roberts accepted the proclamation.
The council also approved a parade permit request from Savannah State University for its Oct. 26 homecoming events and asked the Sanitation Department to assist with cleanup.
