County seeks bridge-fund increase; crews report road and bridge progress

Highway Engineer Brent Wendholt told the Dubois County Commissioners on Sept. 3, 2024, that he intends to request an additional $91,000 in the Cum Bridge Fund to cover a $21,000 asphalt overlay for approaches on 300 North, $50,000 for polymeric thin-deck overlays on several bridges (including CR 600 West, CR 500 South, CR 400 West/150 North, Mariah Hill Road), and $20,000 to reimburse the highway department.
County Highway Superintendent Steven L. Berg reported that Bridge #254 (St. Anthony Road West) has a completed deck and that forms will be removed later in the week to allow curing; the crew will work to open the bridge next week and will address guardrail issues throughout the county. Berg also requested removal from county inventory of an XR-7 paint sprayer described as unrepairable and a 2017 DeWalt hammer drill kit that was lost from a truck. A motion to remove the XR-7 paint sprayer was made, seconded and carried unanimously.
Wendholt outlined planned rejuvenation work on Schnellville Road, CR 1025 East, Division Road, Jasper-Dubois Road, Holland Road East and the county portion of Kentucky Street. Berg noted he is scheduled for knee replacement surgery on Sept. 17 and expects to return in early November.
The appropriation request for the Cum Bridge Fund was presented as a planned request and was not approved at the meeting; commissioners were informed of the schedule and project breakdown.
