Commission hears report of two recent fatal crashes as staff readies Vision Zero grant applications

Katie presented the monthly crash report, saying the commission recorded two recent single-vehicle fatal crashes (North Avenue at the river and the end of Cedar Scholes where it runs into Whit Davis) and several other serious incidents involving vulnerable road users.
"Unfortunately, we had two fatal crashes this past month," Katie said. She described five bicycle crashes, one incident where a driver struck unmanned ACCPD bicycles while leaving the scene of an earlier incident, and a serious pedestrian injury on Lexington Road where the person appeared unwell prior to the event.
Commissioners discussed clustering of pedestrian crash locations around campus corridors and whether larger vehicles create disproportionate harm to people outside vehicles. Katie said she would follow up with municipal court data on citations and promised to research municipal authority to limit large vehicles and return with specifics.
Jason told the commission that the mayor and commission recently accepted the Vision Zero Safety Action Plan and staff are quickly assembling a Safe Streets for All grant application for implementation funding; that grant is due May 26. He also flagged activity on a RAISE grant for planned work on North Avenue and advised commissioners to watch the May–June agenda cycle for further items.
Staff emphasized that the Vision Zero plan adoption and the grant applications are intended to fund countermeasures at priority locations identified in the safety-action plan and that more detailed project information will appear in upcoming agenda items.
