Dayton Town Council adopts zoning amendment, approves contracts and sidewalk repair

The Dayton Town Council on April 15 adopted Ordinance 2025-7, an amendment (UZO Amendment 117) to Tippecanoe Countys unified zoning ordinance establishing a procedure to terminate previously approved Special Exceptions. The council suspended the rules, read the ordinance by title and approved adoption on first and second reading by unanimous roll call votes.
The ordinance affects how the Area Board of Zoning Appeals may terminate special-exception approvals; council members voted without recorded opposition. Town Board President Marc Buhrmester led the motions to read and adopt the ordinance, which was read aloud by Clerk-Treasurer Bridget Cadwallader.
Council members also handled routine financial and procurement matters. The March 2025 Allowance Docket ($27,220.61) and the Claims Docket ($135,038.95) were approved by roll call vote. Council voted to hold payment on warrant #1604 to Fine Lines until the contractor completes all required work.
Procurement motions approved at the meeting included hiring Star Carpet Cleaners to clean Town Hall carpets for $275.00 and awarding Klems Signs a $4,432 contract to produce new town entrance signs. For the maintenance barn, the council accepted a $2,250 bid from Loy Quinn Roofing to replace the ridge cap after Town Manager Kurt recommended a steel cap; that contract was approved by roll call vote.
On Market Street and Main Street improvements, the council debated several options. A proposal to asphalt gravel areas on the east side of Market Street for $16,544.14 failed for lack of a second. The council approved a $4,320 repair to the northeast section of the Main Street sidewalk (motion by Leah Copas, seconded by Steve Schuhle), and separately voted not to asphalt an additional west-side section of Market Street.
The meeting closed with routine council comments about community events and an adjournment by Buhrmester. Clerk-Treasurer Bridget Cadwallader attested the minutes.
