The Wahpeton City Council on Oct. 29 heard presentations from eight local nonprofit organizations requesting a combined $125,000 in FY26/27 funding; council members took no action and deferred decisions to the upcoming budget process.
The requests, described during a special meeting called to order by Mayor Phillip Johnson at 5:00 p.m., were presented as proposals to be scheduled for disbursement from revenue received through hotel/motel tax or the Local Option Sales Tax once the council determines FY26/27 allocations. City Clerk/Administrator Carrie Funk and councilmembers Rosalise Olson, Tom Rierson, Holly Mead, Brad Jones and Merlyn Kruger were in attendance.
Tim Ireland, representing Lakewood Park Association, requested $20,000 for the association's program. Angela Kofoot of the Voluntary Action Center requested $2,500. John Mauel, appearing by Zoom for The Millers Bay Conservancy, requested $2,500. Kiley Zankowski of Vacation Okoboji - Okoboji Tourism requested $10,000. James Kessler asked for $70,000 on behalf of Dickinson County Veterans. Michael Meyers of Lakes Area Hockey Association requested $5,000. Yvonne Taylor of Discovery House requested $10,000. Bob Kirschbaum of Lakes Pearson Art Center was not present but submitted a letter requesting $5,000.
No motions or votes were taken on any funding requests at the meeting; the minutes record that the council "heard from" each organization and that the requests will be scheduled to be expensed from the specified revenue streams if and when the council approves allocations during the FY26/27 budget process. Nathan Rockman joined the meeting at 5:30 p.m., according to the minutes.
The presentations gave council members an overview of each organization's programs and funding needs but did not produce immediate commitments. The council will consider these requests as part of broader budget deliberations for FY26/27, at which time specific amounts and funding sources will be formalized.
